What little nightlife there is can be found on Tortolla, the main island of the British Virgin Islands. The wildest nights are to be had at Bomba Shack, a ramshackle hut on the beach near Long Bay. It is famous for the Full Moon parties where partygoers pin their knickers to the ceiling and drink the infamous mushroom tea. Go just for the experience.
Willy T’s on Norman Island is another lively haunt. Try the local Painkillers – an alcoholic cocktail of rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice – or Pusser’s rum, also a chain of English pubs. For excellent live music, try Quito’s Gazebo in Cane Garden Bay.
Spicy Goat Curry and Fabulous Fish
The restaurants serve some of the best fish and seafood in the Caribbean particularly tuna, swordfish, lobster, prawns and the local mahi mahi. Local specialities worth trying include the spicy goat curry, patty and roti, a pancake filled with curried meat, seafood or vegetables.
Dress is generally casual throughout the island, even in five-star hotels. The climate warm year-round but take a jumper for cooler evenings.
Sightseeing is a Rum Deal in Road Town
With most activities focused on the excellent sailing, there are few main tourist sights. Worth a visit is the folk museum, Callwood’s Rum Distillery, Fort George and Road Town, the capital, where ferries depart for neighbouring islands.
Walking around the islands is a joy tourists can wander around without being hassled. The islands are relatively safe – the prison has just 50 inmates.
British Virgin Islands Luxury Rental Villas
Although there are few top tourist sights, celeb spotting has become popular as the rich and famous make their way to the exclusive Necker island. Holidaymakers looking for a hideaway retreat can rent their own island – Guana resort.
